Harm Reduction

In response to rising rates of HIV/HCV infections in the 1980’s, harm reduction (HR) is the practice of reducing harms associated with substance use to the individual, which may or may not result in abstinence or decreased substance use. HR does not stigmatize individuals who engage in high risk behaviors, but rather views such behaviors as symptomatic of a complex web of lifestyle choices, family dynamics, psychological development, spiritual awareness, and economic and environmental factors amongst things.  In this way, HR can be made more accessible to those in marginalized and vulnerable segments of society, such as injecting drug users (IDU’s), sex trade workers, the LGBTTTIQQ populations, high risk street youth and the homelessness. Benefits to society are increased productivity, offsetting health care costs and people who feel better about themselves.
